Penn State Behrend Engineering Speaker Series Presents "Noninvasive Imaging of the Cardiac Circulation:
Challenges of Evolving Technologies"

Dr. Joe McClellan has had a change in schedule that forces him to cancel his SEET Speaker Series talk, scheduled for this Thursday, February 17.  It will not be re-scheduled for this semester. The next, and last, speaker in the SEET Speaker Series will be Dr. Tom Hemminger on Thursday, March 17.  Dr. Hemminger's topic will be "Machine Vision Inspection of Diamond Cutting Blades."

On Thursday, February 17, Dr. Joseph McClellan, senior vice president of Cardiac Services and director of the Hamot Heart Institute, will present "Noninvasive Imaging of the Cardiac Circulation: Challenges of Evolving Technologies." His lecture, part of the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology Speaker Series, will be held in the Reed Union Building, room 114. The presentation, from noon-1:00 p.m., is free and open to the public.

"Coronary heart disease is the most frequent cause of sudden death and often strikes without any warning," said Dr. McClellan. "Noninvasive cardiovascular imaging modalities were developed to detect the presence of asymptomatic dangerous coronary disease prior to a devastating clinical event."

A variety of techniques including cardiac catheterization, exercise stress testing, and ultrasound imaging have been used for many years to assess the coronary circulation.  More advanced diagnostic modalities, including nuclear imaging, positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and computerized tomographic scanning have been applied recently to more accurately assess the anatomy of the coronary circulation and quantify coronary blood flow.  Each of these modalities has technical advantages and limitations.

"In this seminar we will review the state-of-the-art noninvasive coronary imaging," said Dr. McClellan. "We will outline the technical problems that need to be solved before a simple, accurate, and reproducible technique can be widely applied to the asymptomatic population for the diagnosis of coronary disease and the prevention of dangerous coronary events."

All seminars will be held in Reed 114 from noon-1:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month and will focus on applied research. For more information regarding the SEET Speaker Series, call the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology at 814-898-6125.
