Speaker Hopes to “Change the Conversation" About Mental Illness, Depression College Recognizes National Depression Screening Day Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host Alison Malmon, founder of Active Minds, Inc., this Friday, Oct. 2 at 3:30 p.m. in the Samuel P. “Pat” Black III Conference Center, located on the first floor of the college’s Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). Malmon’s presentation, titled “Changing the Conversation about Mental Illness on College Campuses,” is free and open to the Penn State Behrend community and the public. After Malmon’s brother took his own life while struggling with a mental illness and the pressures of college, she founded Active Minds to combat stigma and increase awareness of mental illness on college campuses. During her visit to Erie, Malmon is making appearances at Penn State Behrend, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Mercyhurst College and Gannon University. Stairways Behavioral Health and Active Minds are co-sponsoring these events. Malmon’s presentation comes less than a week before National Depression Screening Day, on Oct. 8. The Personal Counseling office at Penn State Behrend is recognizing National Depression Screening Day in an effort to reach out to students. On Thursday, Oct. 8, free and anonymous screening forms will be available outside of Bruno’s Café from noon to 1:30 p.m. The forms will be available on Monday, Oct. 12 near the Clark Café in the REDC as well.
