Faculty/Staff News of Note July 2002 Dr. Syed Saad Andaleeb, professor of marketing, attended the Hawaii International Conference on Business, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, June 18-22. While there he presented two papers, "Customer Satisfaction in the Restaurant Industry: An Examination of the Transaction-Specific Model," and Gender Issues and Participation in Decision-Making in a Developing Country." Loretta Brandon, public information assistant in the Office of University Relations, attended a Keith Moore and Associates conference, "How Colleges Can Obtain National (and Regional) Publicity," held June 17-19 in Philadelphia. Congratulations to Campbell J. Bullock, project director for CORE, who was awarded his Master of Arts degree in sociology from San Jose State University on May 25. Cam earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of California at Davis in 1993. George Dudas, instructor of computer science, took "Course 2604-Microsoft Security Clinic," presented by BAC Consulting, Inc., on May 22 in Erie. Dudas also attended a workshop on Connecting, Monitoring, and Troubleshooting CISCO Network Devices by CompuMaster, May 8-10 in Erie. Dr. Thomas L. Hemminger, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been awarded a grant from Diamond Products of Ohio in the amount of $96,296 over a two-year period. Diamond Products is a major manufacturer of diamond-cutting tools for use in industrial applications. The objective is to investigate alternative methods of testing blade integrity and reliability. John Kerwin, assistant professor of communication, addressed the annual meeting of the Midwest Shriners' Hospital directors on Wednesday, June 19, in Erie. His presentation was titled "Image and Substance are Everything: Public Relations for the Shriners' Children's Hospital." Dr. James A. Kurre and Dr. Barry Weller, associate professors of economics, presented a paper at the Twenty-second International Symposium on Forecasting, held June 23-26 at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Their paper was titled "No Room at the Inn? Forecasting Hotel-Motel Revenues for a Local Area." It involved creating a forecasting model for the Erie area's hotel-motel tax, imposed last May. Kurre organized and chaired a session on Regional Forecasting that included four papers from professors at George Mason University, Oklahoma State University, the University of South Carolina, as well the one from Penn State Erie. Dr. Charisse Nixon, assistant professor of psychology, was interviewed for an article in the June 2002 issue of Counseling Today, the publication of the American Counseling Association. The article, titled "Sugar Nor Spice," centers on Nixon's research in relational aggression and the ten-week intervention program she designed for use in middle schools. Dr. Peter Southard, assistant professor of management, has had an article, "Extending Product Profiling through Simulation," accepted for publication in the International Journal of Operations and Production Management. His co-authors are Scott Swenseth of the University of Nebraska and John Olson of DePaul University. Alice Winkelman, area representative in Corporate and Adult Learning, is the outgoing president of the Erie Business and Professional Women's Club. She was honored recently at a dinner planned by her committee chairpersons to thank her for the hours of service she devoted to helping the group meet its aims and objectives. Founded in 1919, BPW/USA was the first among women's organizations to formally endorse the Equal Rights Amendment in 1937. The BPW mission is to achieve equality for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education, and information. Winkelman is a two-term president and has been elected district director.
