Faculty/Staff News of Note June 2003 Dr. Jay C.
Amicangelo, assistant
professor of chemistry, has received a Cottrell College Science Award
of $39,018 in support of research titled "Investigations of
Intermediates Related to Silicon Nitride Chemical Vapor Deposition
Processes Using Matrix-Isolation Infrared Spectroscopy." Dr. Anthony Foyle, assistant professor of geology, recently had an article "Between Beds and Sequences; Stratigraphic Organization at Intermediate Scales in the Quaternary of the Virginia Coast, USA" published in Sedimentology. Co-authors were Donald J. P. Swift, Brian S. Parsons, and George F. Oertel. Ron McCarty and George Dudas, instructors in computer science, attended a Microsoft Technet briefing on security and wireless issues for Microsoft servers in Erie. Dr. Ido Millet, associate professor of MIS, presented a session of "Reporting Tips, Tricks and Techniques" at the Crystal Decisions User Group of North America (CDUGNA) Annual Conference in Vancouver, Washington. Dr. Kenneth P. Miller, director of Student Affairs, received an Ed.D from the University of Pittsburgh in Administrative and Policy Studies. The title of his dissertation was "The Impact of First-Year Interest Groups on College Student Social and Academic Integration." Dr. Blair R. Tuttle, assistant professor of physics, recently had an article published in the American Physical Society Review titled "Ab Initio Valence Band Offsets Between Si(100) and SiO2 from Microscopic Models." Dr. Robert Weissbach, assistant professor of engineering, has won the American Society of Engineering Education's (ASEE) Spread the Word/Campus Representative award for the highest percentage of faculty recruited in the north central section. Weissbach will be honored at the Eighth Annual Campus Representatives Reception at the ASEE Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 23. Dr. Chuck Yeung, associate professor of physics, recently published an article "Modeling Reactive Compatibilization of a Binary Blend with Interacting Particles" which appeared in the Journal of Chemical Physics in May 2003. Co-authors were Mary Hongying Cheng, Anna C. Balazs, and Valeriy V. Ginzburg. Dr. Charles A. Brown, assistant professor of accounting, gave a presentation titled "Order Effects on Auditor Materiality Judgments: The Impact of Qualitative Information" at the American Accounting Association's 43rd Annual Midwest Regional Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri April 10-12. Brown presented this same paper at John Carroll University on April 4 as a guest presenter for their Accounting Department Speaker Series. Dr. Dawn
Blasko and Dr.Victoria
Kazmerski, associate professors of psychology, and Sarah
Hildreth, Behrend undergraduate student, presented their research
at the Annual Meeting of the American Psychological Society in
Atlanta, Georgia, May 30-June 1. Their paper, titled "The
Sarcastic Brain: ERP Evidence for Social Language Processing," was
co-authored with Albert Katz of the University of Western Ontario.
Rande Joy of Maintenance and Operations has been promoted to the newly created position of maintenance foreman. Rande has worked for the college for five years, and Lucien Lawson, supervisor of physical plant maintenance, said "It is a real 'joy' to work with Rande." Jon Meckley, assistant professor of engineering, gave a presentation, titled "Investigations into Flow Imbalances in Single and Multiple Extrusion Blow Molding Die Heads," at the POLYFLOW Users' Group Meetings in Chicago, Illinois June 9-11. Dr. Clare Porac, professor of psychology, attended the meetings of the Canadian Psychological Association in Hamilton, Ontario June 12-14. She presented a paper titled "Hand Skill and Preference in Switched Left -hand Writers." Carla Torgerson and Denise Turso, instructional designers, attended ANGEL Day: A Symposium of Faculty Examples at University Park on May 20. Torgerson and Ron DelPorto, lecturer in computer science, presented a talk titled "Applying Mastery Learning Using ANGEL." Torgerson was also one of six invited panelists for the "Stump the Experts" session. Dr. Thomas M. Spudich, assistant professor of chemistry, published an article titled "Development and Application of Acousto-Optic Background Correction for Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry" in the Journal of Applied Spectroscopy 57(6):703-710 (2003). Co-authors were Heather M. Miller and Jon W. Carnahan. Shannon K. Sweeney, assistant professor of engineering, gave a presentation titled "Analysis and Discussion of Diesel Engine Powertrain Torsional Resonance during Start-up" at the Society of Automotive Engineers' 2003 Noise and Vibration Conference and Exhibition in Traverse City, Michigan on May 8.
