During six weeks of the fall and spring terms, volunteers from local business and industry serve as mentors, offering academic enrichment modules. Since the inception of PEPP in 1991, more than 462 corporate and community mentors representing 25 companies have volunteered their time to work with 2,800 students. The employees of GE & Hamot Medical Center have volunteered hundreds of hours for special enrichment projects with PEPP students. Through mentoring, students learn about careers, etiquette, personal skills, self-esteem, technology, business, decision-making, problem solving, personal initiative, creative thinking, and the art of persuasion. Students also participate in cooperative group dynamics training, teamwork building exercises, community service, and the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition. Students benefit from good role models and the nurturing friendship that the mentors provide.
