Penn State Principles

Open letter from President Graham Spanier to the Penn State Community about Bigotry and Intolerance

Unlike more visible underrepresented groups on college campuses, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and/or questioning (GLBTQ) students cannot be easily identified.

Similarly, there is no easy method of identifying persons supportive of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons and other diverse populations.

Safe Zone provides a way for supportive students, faculty and staff at Behrend to prominently and non-verbally illustrate that they are a safe contact for all people.

Members of the campus community can become allies by participating in a Safe Zone workshop where you would receive a sticker to be placed on your door, window or another location.  The sticker identifies your location as a “safe zone”--safe from hatred, prejudice, and homophobia.

Worshops are provided periodically throught the academic year. Look for an invitation.   If interested in scheduling a workshop for your group or unit, please contact our office at DiversityBehrend@psu.edu.  We would be happy to facilitate one.

Penn State Behrend welcomes and celebrates all cultural backgrounds represented in our students, faculty, and staff.  For information about Diversity at Behrend, please visit www.Behrend.psu.edu/diversity.
