Community Education

To promote community awareness, Police Services strives to have a strong working relationship with the University community. We hope to accomplish this through making public education programs available.

We are continually developing resources to help the community with our Prevention Library

Programs include:

  • Bicycle Program: Officers provide information on bicycle rules and safety as well as free bicycle registration.
  • Ride-Along: Participants may ride or walk with an officer on routine patrol for up to a two-hour period to gain first-hand knowledge of police procedures and operations.
  • DUI Program: A presentation is given on Driving Under the Influence, including laws, detection, arrest procedures, and prosecution. Participants can observe actual field sobriety and chemical tests performed on subjects who have consumed alcoholic beverages.
  • Theft Prevention Program: Officers present information and precautions to be taken to minimize the risk of becoming a victim of theft.
  • Operation ID: Police Services provides engravers and instructions to persons interested in marking valuable items.
  • Sexual Assault Prevention: Issues involving sexual assaults are discussed as well as relevant statistics. Participants view a short film on date rape followed by an open discussion on personal safety.
  • Orientation Program: Officers meet with groups to discuss police procedures and services available from the department.
  • Rap Sessions: Officers are available to meet with groups to discuss topics of their choosing or to facilitate general discussion.
  • Criminal Justice Information Sources: Police and Safety Services maintains statistical information on several criminal justice topics for students doing research for speeches, papers, or news articles. Appointments are preferred but not necessary.
  • Security and Safety for Faculty/Staff Program: Participants view a film on office security, followed by a discussion on personal safety and theft prevention in the work place.

Police Services also has many brochures and printed material on most of the above topics as well as other topics. Many maps are also available, including the Campus Night Map, which has useful safety tips and suggestions. These items are displayed in our brochure rack in the front area of the Police Services office, or they can be sent to you by mail.
